Developer University Returns to 2013 CES

So popular it sold out last year, Developer University will be back at 2013 CES. This unique event pairs application developers with platform vendors, creating connections and opportunities. Developer University has expanded for 2013 to accommodate more speakers. Platform vendors may now sign up for speaking slots at devu.ce.org, which are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Tablet Computer Ownership Continues to Grow, CEA Research Reports

U.S. ownership rates for tablet computers continued to increase in the third quarter of 2012, according to recent research released by CEA. The Consumer Outlook on Tablets: Q4 2012 shows that tablet ownership rates among online U.S. consumers reached 31 percent as of September 2012, more than doubling the ownership rate from October 2011(14 percent). “We expect tablets to play a big role in the upcoming holiday shopping season; not only in sales but also in complementary purchases such as accessories and gift cards," said Kevin Tillman, senior research analyst, CEA.

Digital Health and Fitness Technology Expands by Nearly 25 percent

Interest in digital health and fitness technology is red hot, and the category has grown by nearly 25 percent at the 2013 International CES, the Consumer Electronics Association announced this week. More than 215 exhibitors will showcase devices beyond weight, body mass index, exercise and calorie tracking, accounting for 27,000 net square feet of exhibit space. The next generation of health and fitness devices and apps offer access to complete medical history, comprehensive biometric data and remote access to medical professionals. Over the next five years, wearable devices in sports and fitness will grow to 169.5 million devices, with the body becoming an input/output device where everything can be tracked.

Auto Industry Booms at 2013 International CES

Seven of the top 10 automobile manufacturers will showcase their latest technologies on the CES show floor at this year's CES. Audi, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Hyundai, Kia and Subaru will join more than 110 automotive tech companies displaying their technologies and services on the show floor as consumers increasingly demand technology innovation within their automobiles. CEA industry forecasts predict sales of factory-installed vehicle technologies will increase by 11.3 percent in 2013 to nearly $8.7 billion, and CEA consumer research shows approximately 15 percent of U.S. households now own a vehicle with a connected communication/entertainment system.

2012 CE Hall of Fame Honorees Announced

Twelve industry leaders were named to the 2012 CE Hall of Fame at the 13th annual Consumer Electronics Hall of Fame awards ceremony on Tuesday night. .Speaking at the Consumer Electronics Association’s (CEA) Industry Forum in San Francisco, CEA president and CEO Gary Shapiro, praised the inductees for their contributions to the growth of the industry. “The success of our industry is built upon the technologies and products these leaders created. These honorees are among the true great pioneers on whose shoulders our industry stands. Our products have a powerful impact on the world and I am proud to be part of this strong tradition of innovation that continues to contribute to the economy today.”

Consumer Electronics Industry Announces Ultra High-Definition

The next generation of high-definition TVs, which feature giant screens and more than eight million pixels of resolution, will be called "Ultra High-Definition" or "Ultra HD," the Consumer Electronics Assocation announced recently. This new breed of televisions boast resolution that is four times that of today's high-definition televisions. The name and related minimum performance characteristics are designed to help consumers and retailers understand the attributes of this next generation of superior television and display technology beginning to roll out this fall.

Consumer Electronics Sales Expected to Grow this Holiday Season

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) recently released its 19th Annual CE Holiday Purchase Patterns Study at this week’s Industry Forum in San Francisco. The study found that consumer electronics continue to be the most desired gifts. The most coveted gifts for this year are mobile devices, tablets, and laptops. “Consumers are feeling more confident in the overall direction of the economy this holiday season compared to last year and, as a result, will spend more on gifts, including electronics,” said Shawn DuBravac, CEA’s chief economist and senior director of research.
