Scientific American Innovations People's Choice Award
Official Rules and Regulations

Sponsored by: Scientific American, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), and Zero Air Pollution (ZAP) Electric Cars
Sweepstakes Administrator: CEA

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO WIN. Your entry constitutes your full and unconditional agreement to and acceptance of these Official Rules and Regulations and the decisions of CEA related to the sweepstakes.

Eligibility: The sweepstakes is open only to legal residents of the forty-eight continental United States and the District of Columbia, who are at least 21 years of age or older as of October 31, 2005 and participate in the contest at the 2006 International CES by voting for the Scientific American Innovations People’s Choice Award, January 5-7, 2006 at the Sands Expo and Convention Center, Booth #72444.

Employees of Scientific American, ZAP and CEA or any affiliate thereof and their immediate family members are not eligible to participate. Void outside the forty-eight continental United States and the District of Columbia and where prohibited by law. Contest subject to all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations.

Entry Process: During the entry period, which shall last from 8 a.m., January 5 until 1 p.m. on Saturday January 7, 2006, each eligible person who casts a vote for the Scientific American Innovations People’s Choice Award at the Sands, Booth #72444, shall be entered to win. Votes must be received by 1 p.m. PST on January 7, 2006, in order to be considered eligible. All registered 2006 International CES attendees are eligible. Only one registration entry per person, household and/or e-mail address is allowed. Multiple entries shall be void. Use of any automated or programmed entry method or any false e-mail account will void all entries made by that entrant.

CEA reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any Entry at any time in the event it is determined that the entrant has not complied with these Official Rules.

Prize: The winner will receive a ZAP (Zero Air Pollution) Xebra electric car, worth a manufacturer suggested retail price of approximately $8,995. 
A winner will be determined by a random drawing on January 7, 2006, from all eligible entries received by the Sweepstakes Administrator, whose decisions are final and binding in all respects. Odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received.

The winner’s name shall be announced in a 5 p.m. awards ceremony at the Innovations Design and Engineering Showcase, January 7, 2006 at the Sands Expo and Convention Center, Booth #72444. The winner shall also be identified by a posting on CESweb.org and shall be notified by e-mail or telephone. Sponsor is not responsible for and shall not be liable for late, lost, misdirected or unsuccessful efforts to notify winner.

The winner will be contacted by ZAP by January 31, 2005, to arrange to collect the prize. To claim the prize, the winner must complete the affidavit and general release supplied by the manufacturer.

If a potential winner is found to be ineligible, or if he/she cannot or does not otherwise comply with these Official Rules, an alternate winner will be selected by random drawing.

Prize is nontransferable. All federal, state and local taxes are the sole responsibility of the winner. CEA shall file 1099 tax statements with the IRS for the winner of any prize that has a value exceeding $600. Prizes will be awarded “as is” with no warranty or guaranty, either express or implied, by Sponsor.

Release: Except where prohibited by law, by entering the Contest, each entrant agrees that Sponsor and its designees may use his or her name and likeness for advertising, promotional and other purposes in any and all media now or hereafter known (including the right to post on CESweb.org website) without further compensation or notification. Neither Sponsor nor its affiliates, subsidiaries, divisions, advertising and promotion agencies, or the respective officers, directors, employees or agents of the foregoing (collectively, the “Released Parties”) are responsible for (i) any injury, losses or damages of any kind resulting from participation in this sweepstakes or acceptance, possession or use of any prize; or (ii) any warranty, representation or guarantee express or implied, in fact or in law, relative to any prize, including but not limited to its quality, mechanical condition or fitness. If for any reason the sweepstakes is not capable of running as planned, including infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of Sponsor, which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of this sweepstakes, Sponsor reserves the right at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual who tampers with the entry process, and to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the sweepstakes, and judge entries from among all eligible, non-suspect entries received prior to such action. Released Parties assume no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, theft or destruction or unauthorized access to, or alteration of, entries. Released Parties are not responsible for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer on-line systems, servers, or providers, computer equipment, software, failure of any e-mail or entry to be received by Sponsor on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any website, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to participant’s or any other person’s computer related to or resulting from participation or downloading any materials in this sweepstakes. CAUTION: ANY ATTEMPT BY AN ENTRANT TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE ANY WEBSITE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THIS SWEEPSTAKES IS A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAW AND, SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, SPONSOR RESERVES THE RIGHT TO SEEK DAMAGES FROM ANY SUCH ENTRANT TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW.

Privacy: Except as per the winner’s information discussed above, the personal information collected during the sweepstakes will not be shared by Sponsor with outside parties.
