An Introduction to the 2009 International CES
Technology and Emerging Countries Program

The second annual Technology and Emerging Countries Program (TEC) at the 2009 International CES® focuses on the role technology plays to further economic growth, sustainability and development. TEC was a resounding success in its first year, generating more than 115 media stories from top outlets such as the BBC, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer and Businessweek, and receiving tens of thousands of podcast downloads of TEC speeches and panels.

More than 130,000 consumer electronics professionals from 140 countries are expected to attend CES making it the world’s largest annual consumer electronics tradeshow and premier global industry event.

Program Details

The TEC program will take place during the 2009 International CES from 1–4 p.m. Friday, January 9, in The Venetian Palazzo Ballroom in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Intel Chairman Craig Barrett and Cisco Chairman and CEO John Chambers will headline this year’s program. The TEC program is designed to foster technology partnerships and investments in emerging nations and highlight how market-based approaches can lead to universal access to technology and advance development outcomes.

The program will also host the panel “Reaching the Promise of Universal Access to Technology: Creating the Global Tech Ecosystem” Panelists include Kazi Islam, CEO of Grameen Solutions, Michael Fairbanks, Co-founder of the SEVEN Fund and William Kamkwamba, inventor. The Panel will be moderated by Eric Nonacs, Managing Director of Endeavour Financial and Senior Advisor to the William J. Clinton Foundation.

Following the program, a networking reception will provide global press, top executives and members of the financial community an ideal opportunity to engage in further discussion. Learn more about this unique program.

TEC TechZone

Are you a manufacturer or organization that offers products and/or services to support the spread of technology in emerging countries? Then you’ll want to take advantage of the opportunity to showcase your products at the 2009 International CES as part of the Technology and Emerging Countries (TEC) TechZone. Participating companies will display the innovations that make it possible for every person on this planet to make use of technology and benefit from growing consumer electronics (CE) advances. Foundations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) engaged in disseminating this technology to rural communities are also encouraged to participate. United Nations Global Alliance for Information and Communication Technology and Development Conference

On Saturday, January 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., a conference on 500/12 Initiative will be held under the United Nations Global Alliance for Information and Communication Technology and Development (UNGAID) umbrella to announce the 500/12 Initiative. This initiative will provide 500,000 computers for 10,000 schools for 33,000,000 students in 60 countries by the year 2012. The conference will kick off with the official announcement of the 500/12 Initiative and throughout the day specific action plans will be covered. Flip Video Campaign

CEA is proud to partner with the World Reuse Repair and Recycling Association (WR3A) to showcase our Flip Video Project which examines what happens to computers once they leave the United States and head for schools, hospitals and other worthy recipients in emerging economies. Visa and Travel Information

Wait times for a visa interview can be several weeks or more in many countries, especially during peak travel periods.
